Wait to Rush, Rush to Wait

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Yeah I know I’ve not been updating my site lately - tied up with work and my final year project in school.  In fact, I just came back from a meeting with my project supervisor at Plaza Singapura today, and there’s still lots of work to do in order to properly finish our project.

Anyway, so far the new job is quite alright, its the waiting for the action to start that kills. On top of that, boring stuff have to be documented for the end-users (as more often than not, their computer literacy is quite bad), as well as local system documentation for whoever takes over my position in the future.

Its kind of amazing to see that most people do not know that there are free alternatives to expensive products that can do the most of the job that they need - for example, Audacity versus Sony Sound Forge, OpenOffice versus Microsoft Office, Ubuntu Server versus Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Its even more shocking to realize that 99% of an organization’s primary and secondary servers run on Windows Server 2003. Especially for server operating systems - the more simplified they become (through GUI), the weaker the future generation of server administrators get. Although simplification is good, it is also important to have a strong foundation in using the command line as well.

I Gotta Go My Own Way

Well, after a hectic schedule in May, I am now finally leaving my current workplace for one nearer to my home in 2 weeks’ time. Will miss the times spent here, and the interaction with friends and fellow colleagues there.

The last month has been extremely tiring, as the school assignment workload was very heavy, and coffee is the staple drink in the morning for the last two weeks of the month. Added to that, the job interviews at different places, and the crazy stuff that I have to do at work is enough to make one feel very frustrated and stressed. On a brighter note, Battlestar Galactica is now shown on Arts Central, but I think borrowing DVDs from the library is faster than waiting one day a week for the show to run, and even then there are censorship issues.

My PSP died on me last week, I’m not sure when though. I took it apart and read through a few guides and found out that my PSP’s power switch seems to be spoilt, and on top of that, the backlight fuse is spoilt. Right now, I’m using a Pandora’s Battery to power on my PSP, with the help of despertar del cementario v5, and a custom configuration file for timemachine that will boot the NAND when I don’t press any button on power up, and Despertar del Cementerio v5 when I press the left shoulder trigger button. Until I get the switch or power board replaced, I have to rely on taking out the battery and putting it back in to power on the PSP.

Saturday Burnt…

…fixing Mozilla. I installed a new extension, thinking that it would help me in organizing my extensions (Mozilla has a weird design flaw that you need an extension to manage its own extensions, unlike Firefox which has a built-in extension manager), but in the end, messed up my extensions and resulting in me solving the problem the entire afternoon and finally deleting the chrome directory and manually re-installing all my extensions, including new ones that I find useful. Anyways, here’s a screenshot:

Notice that I have the current website’s IP address in the bottom right hand corner, and the Firefox logo and an “IE on top of pages” icon beside the print icon at the top right. Does IE 7 have this feature? Hah!

I Was Molested By A Secondary School Girl

Monday, March 8th, 2004

Basket, a lower-sec girl I don’t know pushed my behind to get me out of the way while I was climbing up the stairs…luckily she was playing catching in school with some friends of hers (or being chased, whatever they were doing). Tsk. Must beware of kiddies running about when I go back to my sec sch next time.

Well today was quite an OK day, except for the ass-grabbing. Went to school to attend a talk about Open Source Computing by some guy from the Linux Users Group Singapore in place of my WSAS practical today because our tutor told us to attend the talk as it is related to what we are going to do for this term - installing, configuring and securing Apache HTTPd. LOL! The guy showed the audience his GNOME Desktop interface, and I THINK the audience was impressed, but not for me and probably some other student who have come across Linux. Slick looks, but its no big deal. Its just the KDE/GNOME interface sitting on top of a virtual console. And “normal” users complain that the Linux OS is hard to master. Bah, I was using Yggdrasil Linux when I was primary 5, and back then, no games meant that the computer is useless (ah, I was young and carefree…). KDE and GNOME didn’t even exist back then, they only started in 1996, and all I got was X11 Windows, which was totally bad, but at least more bearable than staring at a screen filled with black and white text, and it was buggy. Heck, now with all these fancy window managers for Linux, I STILL have to resort to the console in order to access a few things during practical. Well, I’d like to play with Linux, just that I don’t have time to do so. Anyways after that talk I went back to my sec school to present my progress to my HOD/IT. So far he’s reserved about my progress, but I believe that I can finish it on time.

Darwin, Crashed and Burnt

Saturday, November 23rd, 2002

Guess I was wrong about Darwin - I can’t install the binaries. Guess will have to play with open-source OSes some other time. I’m caught up with relaxing myself after work. Sigh. I’m learning MFC right now…a long road to achieving my dream as a child. As you can see, my website has not been updated much, the reason for this is that I’m preparing for a *TOTAL REVAMP* of my website! It’ll be ready (hopefully) by Christmas, if I ever get the drive to finish it…

A Bold Step Towards Apple’s Dominion - Darwin x86!

Downloading Darwin 6.0.2 x86 binaries, and see if it REALLY looks like MacOS X. If so then I shall install it on my laptop and ‘force’ myself to use it for… VIDEO EDITING!
